Do I need a referral from my general dentist to see an orthodontist?

If you think you or your child needs braces, you may be surprised to learn most – maybe all – dental insurance plans do not require a referral. You can make an appointment with an orthodontist any time to discuss your orthodontic needs and set up a treatment plan.

By the same token, if your dentist does make a referral, you do not need to choose that orthodontist. You’re free to see anyone you feel can do the best job for you.

That doesn’t mean, however, that your general dentist has no role to play in your care. He or she definitely does. Before you visit a specialist, your dentist should make sure your teeth and gums are healthy enough for orthodontic treatment. Also, you should ask your dentist’s advice on the best course for your needs. Sometimes that isn’t braces.

With or without a referral, you should bring your child for an orthodontic consultation by age 7, as the American Association of Orthodontists recommends. Examining young children before all the permanent teeth have erupted may enable an orthodontist to correct problems that would be more difficult and costly to address later. When choosing an orthodontist, you should be aware that some insurance plans won’t cover work that began before you were eligible for coverage and that, in some cases, plan-preferred orthodontists will cost you less out of pocket than a non-plan specialist. It is a good idea to check with your insurance provider to see what your plan covers.

Once you sign up for treatment, the office staff should work with you to help process forms and ensure your receive your maximum benefit.

If your dentist hasn’t recommended an orthodontist or you would like a second opinion, how do you find one?

• Ask friends who have had positive, successful experiences with their orthodontists – and check their smiles.

• Make sure the orthodontist you select is trained and certified in the specialty and not a general dentist. One way to do this is to search his or her name at www.braces.org.

• Ask other specialists, such as an oral surgeon – who works with many orthodontists – for a recommendation.

• Check out a prospective orthodontist’s website and read the information it provides.

• Although they’re not always an accurate assessment, check online reviews. A pattern of similar write-ups can be revealing.

• If you need financing, find an office that provides payment plans for patients who do not have insurance or whose insurance does not cover their full cost.

• Ascertain that the orthodontist uses up-to-date technology.

• Ask about treatment options – the orthodontist should offer more than one, such as traditional braces and Invisalign.

• Visit the office and “listen to your gut.” You will be spending a lot of time in this environment with this staff – make sure you’re trusting and comfortable with them.
